Mykonos Tourist Information: Photograph of the Chora coastOne of Greece's famous Cyclades Islands, Mykonos exudes a distinctive glamour, gloss and Greek personality. However, beneath this initial facade, tourists will be treated to some gorgeous beaches, an intense nightlife and some interesting historical sights.

Mykonos Town (Hora) is the island's rather characterful capital and this town is central to the island's tourism scene. Hora is well known for its Old Port ferry quay, bustling Taxi Square (Plateia Manto Mavrogenous), waterfront tavernas, museums, trendy boutiques and whitewashed houses, particularly within its Little Venice quarter. The Mykonos Tourist Information Centre is to be found within Hora, on the Plateia Karaoli Dimitriou, close to both the Old Jetty and the Town Hall.

For many tourists staying on Mykonos, it is the island's beaches that make the holiday. Beaches are plentiful here and most have beautiful, golden sand and are easy to reach. From June onwards, they can start to become rather busy, and most beaches just aren't large enough to provide seclusion, although sun loungers are often grouped together. The closest beaches to Hora and not necessarily to best that Mykonos has to offer, but are especially popular, including both Aghios Stefanos Beach and Platis Gialos. however, for the most glitzy, party beaches, head west to the very lively Paradise and Superb Paradise resorts. Mykonos Tourist Information: Image showing the colourful houses in Little VeniceThe tourist attractions around Mykonos are never far from the beaches, and the island's energetic nightlife scene is quite enticing and not to be underestimated. Although there are some very lively clubs on the island, the dance bars around Paranga and Paradise tend to be where the crowds head when the sun begins to set, although the megaclub that is the Cavo Paradiso is not to be overlooked. Alternatively, English-language films are regularly screened in the open-air at the Cinemanto at the Pitaraki within Hora, or simply take a stroll around the town's labyrinth of streets and alleyways, which it is believed were built in this way to confuse attacking pirates. Mykonos Tourist Information: View of the waterfront windmillsTraditional Cycladic architecture is widespread on Mykonos, with the whitewashed houses within the Little Venice area of Hora being perched at the very top of tall cliffs and appearing to be quite precariously positioned. However, it is the windmills of Mykonos that many tourists remember most fondly, which were once used to grind grain for both the island and for exporting. The restored 'Bonis Mill' is particularly interesting and now operates as a small museum, providing insightful information about the past lives of windmills on the island. Other island landmarks of note include the Church of Panagia Paraportiani, and the 6th-century Moni Panagias Tourlianis monastery, within the village of Ano Mera.
