Mykonos Tourist Attractions: Beachfront viewAway from the history of the island, many of the tourist attractions of Mykonos are based around the beaches and coastline. Open-air movies are screened in the summer events at the Cinemanto and are always a crowd puller.

Tourists will also enjoy exploring the various attractions littered around the 'Pirate' alleyways in Mykonos Town (Hora), where you may even bump into town's mascot, Petros the pelican, who freely wanders around. And when the sun begins to set, the main tourist attractions of Mykonos are centred around its vibrant nightlife scene, when dance bars quickly fill up and spill out, onto the streets.

The island's exceptional nightlife has long been a major draw card for tourists and Mykonos ranks amongst the very top clubbing destinations within the whole of the Mediterranean, rivaling the likes of Ayia Napa and Ibiza. Many leading DJs arrive on the island during the summer months and can be found within the biggest nightspots around the major resorts of Paranga, Paradise and also the rather aptly named resort of Super Paradise. Rather than actual nightclub attractions, the nightlife action on the island of Mykonos tends to focus more on lively dance bars, although there are a number of extremely popular clubs if that is what you are looking for.

The gay scene on the island of Mykonos has long been thriving, with the endless stylish fashion and sun-drenched beaches making this a major gay-friendly destination and well known throughout Europe. In general, gay life on the island is quite restrained and by no means flaunted, although the gay clubs and bars within Hora can become quite quite crowded and animated last at night, when the crowds often spill outside and onto the surrounding streets. The most noteworthy gay bars within Hora include Diva on the Kouzi Georgouli, Kastro on the Agion Anargyron and also Porta on the Ioanni Voinovich.

Something quite different to the more regular beach attractions on Mykonos is Petros the Pelican, the official island mascot for in excess of 50 years. The original Petros the Pelican arrived on the island following a storm during the fifties and soon become quite a familiar character. After dying some 30 years later, the pelican was replaced and the Petros of today tends to live on around waterfront, although can often be seen strolling all around the harbour and town, and is today joined by a couple of pelican friends.

Many centuries ago, pirates were rife in the Aegean waters around the Cyclades islands. It is widely believed by many that the maze-like streets and alleyways from Hora (Mykonos Town) were built as a means to confuse any possible raiders, who could effectively soon become lost in this labyrinth, although in reality, history shows that this idea was not particularly successful and pirates generally found there way around. Today, tourists will find that walking around the alleyways of Hora is an especially pleasant way to spend time.
