Mykonos Museums and Mykonos Art Galleries

There are no less than five museums of note on the island of Mykonos, offering an excellent alternative to coastal attractions. Housing a number of important collections, the Archaeological Museum is home to a host of exhibits, including marble sculptures, ceramics and valuable jewellery, not only from Mykonos, but also from the Greek islands of both Delos and Renia (the necropolis of Delos).
Offering a true insight into the importance and history of the island's rich nautical past, the Aegean Maritime Museum is home to a particular fascinating collection of maritime-related paraphernalia. Also of interest on Mykonos is Lena's House, which, transported back in time, to the end of the 19th century when you step inside.

The Archaeological Museum is one of the most popular of all the cultural attractions on the island and celebrates the island's long and rich history. Located in the somewhat elevated area of Ano Mili, exhibits here are both plentiful and varied. Particularly impressive is the statue of mythic Greek hero and son of god Zeus, Hercules, which has been created in Parian marble and is quite a sight to behold. Of note, the views of the city below and the beautiful windmills are exceptional.

Popular exhibits within this attraction include maps, detailed models of shops, navigational instruments and ancient sea vessels, which once sailing well beyond the Aegean Sea. The Aegean Maritime Museum is to be found within a traditional Mykonian building from the 19th century and is run as a purely non-profit attraction.

Mykonos Museums and Art Galleries: Lena's House - Tria Pigadia, Mykonos, Greece, GR

Lena's House is a charming and accurate representation of middle-class Mykonian life of this time. Named after its former Greek owner, Lena Skrivanou, Lena's House is filled with traditional furnishings and antiquities, allowing you to imagine how different life was on the island, just over 100 years ago.

Mykonos Museums and Art Galleries: Folk Art Museum (Folklore) - Kastro, Mykonos, Greece, GR

The Folk Art Museum is a particularly charming cultural attraction on the island and is housed within a sea captain's house from the 18th century. Step inside to find a large and somewhat eclectic collection of artefacts, with include historical furnishings, old musical instruments, photographs, ceramics and even some canons. The Folk Art Museum is located within the Kastro neighbourhood and is also well-known of Mykonos for its excellent collection of paintings and etchings, which often depict shipping vessels from the past.

Mykonos Museums and Art Galleries: Agricultural Museum - Agiou Ioannou, Mykonos, Greece, GR

The island's popular Agricultural Museum enjoys an open-air setting and features a number of historical buildings, well preserved from the Mykonos of yesteryear. Visitors will be able to explore a renovated windmill in perfect working order, as well as a miller's house and a huge collection of argictural tools, which include both a threshing floor and even a wine press. Other highlights include two small churches, a working water wheel, a traditional stone oven, a dovecote and much more besides, although the windmill can't help but steal the limelight a little. If you are here in the middle of September, then you may be able to join in the celebrations of the grape harvest.
